We are offering one more late summer internship.(3 vacancies)
The Internships
Who are internships for?
Internships are intended for individuals earnestly seeking hands on training and experience in preparation for becoming small scale organic commercial growers themselves.
Accommodation, Food etc Accommodation is in 2 clean, dry caravans, unheated but with plenty of warm bedding. There is room in the house when required. You have access to the house at all times, and we eat all our meals together, usually amidst lots of conversation and laughter. All meals and snacks are provided. We feed you very well, with our own eggs, fruit and veg, all our meat and fish is local, most of our dry goods are organic too. We have reduced the amount of sugary baking that we do, in the interests of health and waistlines! But there is PLENTY of everything else. We bake our own bread and make our own yoghurt, small tasks that wwoofers/interns are invited to help out with.
Everyone takes turns helping out with meal prep/doing dishes/cleaning up after meal time, and two meals a week are cooked by our wwoofers/ interns. These house tasks are done in free time. Just like in a family, please tidy up after yourself, respect each other and our home/belongings, and give everything your best shot.
General Information about Great Barrier Island (Aotea)
Our Island is extremely beautiful - gorgeous beaches, bush, hikes, peace and quiet, wild and rugged topography. Sixty percent of the land on GBI is regenerating forest under DOC management. The Island has just become the third Dark Sky Sanctuary in the world. We have no traffic lights! A population of only 950.
Our property is situated in the sun-drenched Okiwi Basin on the Pacific east coast of the island, at the edge of the pristine Whangapoua Estuary. We have incredible, deep fertile alluvial/volcanic soil and are protected against the strong salty winds by bamboo shelter belts.
In your Free Time… There are lots of hiking and camping opportunities as well as for birdwatching, kayaking, fishing, surfing and swimming in crystal clear water. The Hillary Outdoors Centre is located nearby and has opportunities for all kinds of outdoor pursuits. We have no television. There is little local entertainment so life here is quiet and simple. We have a great library of books on horticulture and organic production, plus a wide range of novels and other reading material, and lots of board games.
Internet Usage We encourage our helpers to purchase their own data allowance with a cell phone package: only Vodafone and Spark are supported here.
Other Points….
We have two friendly dogs, who go everywhere with us (including in the house) so it is important you like dogs and have no dog allergies.
Gerald had a kidney transplant in December 2014 after 5 1/2 years of dialysis. As his immune system is suppressed it is important that he avoids contact with contagious sickness! SO PLEASE do not come here if you have an acute/chronic, infectious illness!
